“Live simply so others may simply live.”
― Mother Teresa
"Planet Earth is dying", "Climate Change is real", "We need to act now" these are some of the famously known claims from people who are concerned and request actions from global authorities to combat the climate emergency. For some individuals, these claims are tiresome and cliche, however, these are as valid and truthful as the sun rises daily. Due to climate change, the planet's temperature is rising, hurricane and winter seasons are more severe yearly, and countries are losing both people's lives and territory. These are just some of the multiple consequences of the climate emergency, which are also the signals to be alarm of not ending as apocalyptic world depicted in Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road.
The 21st Century world is under a countdown, not to celebrate New Year's Eve, but to wake up from a lifestyle of bad habits that are killing the world. There are even scientifically predictions of the future of the planet under a free run of climate change, predictions that have been very accurate. In both McCarthy's novel and in the real world, humankind's actions are both the cause and the solution to this problem. Today's countries, particularly in America, there is a culture of consumption and abundance with little actions in favor of things that truly benefit people. This is the root of climate change, and one similar characteristic with the novel Brave New World, in which citizens' only interests is to be consumers of the society.
However, citizens of the 21st Century world still have one chance to do a U-turn to change their consumerism habits to more eco-friendly ones, which will avoid their world to die as it happen in the novel The Road. There are many ways that individuals can start to work together against climate change. While asking and maintaining laws that protect the planet and reduce acts that damage it, people can take action on their hands by opting to create holiday decorations from recycled materials instead of buying them. Also, avoiding food waste and plastic are a must.
