To Whom It May Concern

I immigrated to this country in the summer of 2018. I had to learn a new language, get familiar with a new culture, and become part of a fast and ever-changing society, while keeping an excellent academic record and keeping my dream of graduating from college alive. I also continue to maintain my commitment to helping the Immigrant and Latino communities as well as my College community, by volunteering and preparing myself professionally, such as becoming a tax-prep and Spanish interpreter/translator for Mosholu Montefiore Community Center in the Spring of 2022 as well as getting involved with on-campus activities and events as a student ambassador for both the Admissions Office for the Open Houses events, and the Office of International Affairs for the studying abroad program in Spain. Since day one, I have had the blessings of my College faculty and other support staff to improve my English and assimilating into the American society. I have chosen to prepare for a career which will help me assist the immigrant community and perhaps dreamers like me. Therefore, I am in open to start my journey in the workforce and to continuing pursuing my academic goals of becoming a clinical social worker.

I am eager to complement my studies at St. Francis College, in Psychology and Italian with practical experience. I have a passion for service, have Spanish translation skills, critical thinking and active listening skills, have a background in research policy and advanced psychology courses, and I have been a trusted team player in group projects.

The years 2020 and 2021 posed unusual challenges for people due to COVID-19. It reaffirmed my decision to pursue a career in psychology because I noticed the impact of the pandemic on people’s health, not only physically, but also mentally and psychologically. As a full-time employee in my dream job, I hope to utilize and improve my knowledge obtained in school including my Statistical and research experience.

I am also determined to carve a career where I would assist patients to achieve the highest possible level of independence. This is also reflected on my volunteer work for ENGin, my work as Spanish translator, and my tax prep internship. At ENGin, I assist Ukrainian students with their English skills while enhancing my own skills as project manager creating and executing learning materials. I also supervise student’s engagement and progress while providing them with feedback on tutoring sessions.

During the summer of 2022, I was a Research Policy and Social Media content intern for Human Resources Administration at the Office of Citywide Health Insurance Affairs (OCHIA). At OCHIA, I researched the Department of Health and Human Services policies to summarize and present to my team. This position helped me practice reports writing, improved attention to detail, record keeping of daily tasks and tracking the team’s goals.

In the summer of 2023, I had the honor of achieving one of my career and academic dreams. At NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation, I served as a Social Worker shadowing intern for the Health Career Opportunity Program. This program offered me the opportunity to have what I call a VIP experience of the daily tasks as a social worker in the hospital setting, including how to evaluate with inpatients and outpatients, write summaries and comments about the patients, and work with a multidisciplinary team to improve and address patient’s concerns to maintain a patient-centered environment. I also gained skills utilizing EPIC system, attended meetings with a high performing team of wide-ranging professionals while becoming familiar with the language used in this field.

Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement. In order to further discuss my qualities and aptitudes and how they can be an asset for a potential work opportunity, I can be reached via email (airamaguasvivas25@gmail.com).
